Apple and Google agree to change app stores after ‘effective duopoly’ claim

I’m particularly frustrated when I see bait-and-switch headlines on Verge stories, of course, and worried they’re taking away our ability to market our own work. I found another that claimed to be about a GPU maker commenting on the RAM shortage; it linked instead to a Digitimes story about a RAM maker. But Google’s AI has no clue what parts of these stories are new, relevant, significant, or true, and it can easily confuse one story for another. “I’d encourage people to click on stories and read them, and not trust what Google is spoon-feeding them.” For example, Google’s AI claimed last week that “US reverses foreign drone ban,” citing and linking to this PCMag story for the news.

God knows I tried, but I still couldn’t find a news app that felt as comprehensive and as direct as Google News. I also experimented with a few apps that let you build your own news feed using RSS, like Feedly — there are plenty of such apps on the Play Store. The content density was just right, and so were the news types and overall quality (which I presumed would get better over time). I don’t know how broadly Google is showing these “trending topics” AI headlines yet, but it seems the company is testing them beyond the Google Discover news feed, too. I’ve seen fewer examples of egregious clickbait, partly because Google Discover is now serving me quite a few unadulterated news stories alongside its AI ones — though it does cut off their genuine headlines far too quickly, making many tough to read. Like I explained last month, these AI headlines are akin to a bookstore replacing the covers of the books it puts on display — only here, the “bookstore” is the news tab that appears when you swipe right on the homescreen of a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel phone, and the “cover” might be a AI-generated lie instead of the truth.

In March 2005, Agence France-Presse (AFP) sued Google for $17.5 million, alleging that Google News infringed on its copyright because “Google includes AFP’s photos, stories and news headlines on Google News without permission from Agence France Presse”. Historically users could choose to hide articles originating from a news source. The service covers news articles appearing within the past 44 days on various news websites. In 2020, Google announced they would be spending US$1 billion to work with publishers to create Showcases, “a new format for insightful feature stories”.

This second cohort follows the inaugural JournalismAI Innovation Challenge, supported by the Google News Initiative which awarded 35 publishers from 22 countries grants. By translating existing data into practical insights, the framework will support future outreach strategies – including personalised newsletters – and contribute to a more sustainable financial model for non-profit independent journalism. Tempo, one of Indonesia’s most established independent news organisations, will create an intelligent platform that centralises five decades of archival content into a single Digital Asset Management system. The project includes a Slack-based companion that helps staff record impact in real time, while AI organises and analyses this information to reveal patterns in how coverage serves readers and communities. The Philippine digital news organisation Rappler is building Intelligent Reader Assistant that uses AI-driven recirculation to serve readers at every stage of engagement. Public Policy, an Italian news agency specialising in political and parliamentary reporting, is building Postilla AI, a platform that combines its live coverage of Italian and European institutions with official parliamentary documents and open political databases.

The feature’s launch in Australia came amid the implementation of the country’s News Media Bargaining Code; Google stated that it believed the Showcase program was in compliance with the Code. In October 2014, a group of German publishers granted Google a license to use snippets of their publications gratis; the group had first claimed that such snippets were illegal, and then complained when they were removed by Google.

The three videos show what happened before and after the shooting by a Border Patrol agent on Oct. 4, 2025, in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood. Frances Dahlke, 88, wanted to make sure her grandson Alex was the one to show her above the clouds for the first time. The Justice Department and 14 states accuse Google of illegally monopolizing searches by making deals to be the dominant search engine on their devices. The 1.2 million square feet of space will become one of the biggest corporate expansions in the city’s history.

  • Google News used to have an API but it was deprecated many years ago.
  • Top_news() returns the top stories for the selected country and language that are defined in GoogleNews class.
  • “I’d encourage people to click on stories and read them, and not trust what Google is spoon-feeding them.”
  • Applied to journalism, Jor-MCP will transform news content into structured, governable data streams accessible under clear licensing and editorial terms.

My return to Google News is less about will and more about the lack of better — or even comparable — alternatives. Call me a creature of habit, but Google News continues to fit well into my workflow. The app sticks to its basics without the quirks others experiment https://punchng.com/foreign-online-games-benefits/ with — and that actually works in its favor.

Just the one code being given away when thousands of people are likely to get involved feels a bit stingy, although at the time of writing Ubisoft’s post hasn’t exactly blown up, so you might be in with a shot. And Google AI decided to advertise our big Verge Awards at CES 2026 story as “Robots & AI Take CES,” which was basically the opposite of our conclusion in that story. It characterizes these new offerings as “trending topics,” even though each “trending topic” presents itself as one of our stories, links to our stories, and uses our images, all without competent fact-checking to ensure the AI is getting them right.
